  • Hello & Welcome

I’m Nathan, a wedding photographer based in York, but travelling all over Yorkshire and the UK. I specialise in natural, spontaneous and unobtrustive wedding photography.

The couples who book me often to do so because they are looking for a wedding photographer who understands the importance of capturing timeless images that tell the story of their day.

The majority of my weddings are in York and Yorkshire. However, an increasing number of my enquiries come from couples who are based elsewhere in the UK.

Please get in touch if you'd like to find out more or to arrange a consultation.

Ok, so there’s an awful lot being said on the web about the new VSCO film software for Lightroom. VSCO are based near San Francisco and have developed a camera specific raw editing tool. regular visitors to this site will know that I love all things film and so I thought that I’d give  it a go. Initial thoughts ~ I’m impressed. This picture was a 3 click conversion.  Also, the film emulations appear (to me at least) to be very, very accurate.

Fotograf fredric - Interesting. What preset did you use here?

Nathan - Hello fredric. WB and tone were adjusted in Lightroom. Then the 3 clicks in VSCO were 1. Fuji 400H + 2. Auto Black 3. Fade

Image of the week | Indian wedding ~ Surrey

I love first dances. I loved this one especially. Lee & Gurpreet’s wedding was a joy to photograph from start to finish and the day was a true celebration and coming together of cultures.

I like it when first dances are slow. For me the first dance brings the formal part of the day to a close. It’s a chance for the couple to pause, take a breath and show their love off.

I often edit the first dance into black and white. However, this wedding (like most Indian weddings) screamed colour and so, well, I just kind of left that side of things alone.

Paul - Fantastic shot Nathan, You can really feel the atmosphere of the shot and your right it needed to be shown in colour. That light is pretty amazing too. Great work mate.

Nathan - Cheers Paul :)

James - Lovely tender moment!

Nathan - Thanks James, appreciate the comment

Image of the week | ‘Little Friends’~ Museum Gardens, York

Ok, so I know I already posted an image of the week. However, this is a new website and it’ll be at least another week before I am able to complete the content side of things. I figure on that basis that I can be forgiven a second image of the week post?

This shot is one of my favourites. It was a spontaneous, completely unplanned shot. I’d been shooting some more formal shots when I happened to come across these two. They were engrossed in conversation and it seemed as if they didn’t have a care in the world.

Image of the week | Alexa & Andy ~ the Hospitium, York

Alexa and Andy were married earlier this year at the Hospitium in York. The Hospitium is a beautiful 14th Century venue set in the heart of the city and I always look forward to shooting weddings there.

Photographing the first dance can be challenging. It’s one of those ‘key’ shots and the pressure is on to try and capture the intimacy of the moment.  Sometimes (as with this picture) the challenge is technical. I knew that Alexa & Andy’s first dance would be need to be shot in low light.  So with that in mind I fired off a few shots using flash. These first shots were ok but I wasn’t happy with them (I rarely use flash if I can help it).  I then decided to take advantage of the DJ’s lights and moved to the other side of the dancefloor. Moving my position enabled me to backlight Alexa and Andy and I was confident that this would let me get the shot that I knew I wanted. All I had to do then was turn the flash off, push the ISO up to 1600 and wait…..

James - Really nice tender moment, well captured!

admin - Thank you James

steven - lovely lighting – flash would have killed a moment like this

Caelen Weber - Very nice work Nathan. Love it!

Nathan - Cheers Caelen & Steven. Caelen have you considered submitting Kate & Tom’s wedding to Julia at Brides Up North?

A love affair with film

Ok, so we’re now living in a digital age. Digital tv, downloads and cameras. I, like most am a convert. It took me a while however. See, I’m a child of the 70′s and that means I’m in love with all things analogue; especially when it comes to music. I’ll never get rid of my records or the countless mix tapes that I spent hours fussing over as a teenager; recording, pausing and labouring over the track list to ensure a perfect fit on both sides…… Anyway, back to the title of this post. A while back, it struck me that I’d completely abandoned my film cameras. I wanted to reignite my love affair with film. Remember sending a forgotten film off to be developed and then getting the prints back and being catapulted into memories and events that you’d long since forgotten? I wanted those feelings back.

That was 2 years ago and I’ve been shooting film ever since then (mostly for my personal stuff but also occasionally at weddings too) . I honestly think that the discipline of using film (having to make each shot count) has improved my photography. It’s altered my approach to shooting weddings. I’m more confident now,  holding back, observing and only releasing the shutter when I see the picture that I want to take…..

James - These shots are lovely, like the photo of the old man on the train. Very thoughtful and sensitive!

Simon Thomas - Totally agree. Why take 3 thousand images in a day to only use 600? The answers simple with digital we can and for some reason we know we don’t have to but you feel obliged to do so even though it only makes more work for us.

Learning to step back and look for the shots is a valuable lesson and one that I have relearned over the past 18mths by dusting off my Olympus 35mm gear again for my own use. One body, three prime lenses and a flash. Tell me again why I forgot everything the moment I went digital?

admin - Thank you. We should all be shooting digital a little bit more like film.

David - As a fellow wedding photographer i really do love the black and white pics, good work Nathan.
