Zak and Sarah were married in April. The weather leading up to the wedding had been awful and I was expecting the worst. However, we couldn’t have been luckier on the day and I can honestly say that Zak and Sarah’s wedding was one of the most natural and fun weddings that I’ve ever had the privilege of photographing. I’ll be featuring the full wedding soon….

I’ve been super busy recently with the onset of the new wedding season. Lots of fabulous weddings and wonderful new couples. I’ll be showcasing some more complete weddings soon. In the meantime, my ‘image of the week’ series has been sorely neglected of late and so I’m kickstarting it with this photograph taken earlier on this month when I had the pleasure and privilege of photographing Dominic and Leanne’s wedding at Kenwood Hall in sheffield. It’s a simple shot taken during Leanne’s preparations but I love the quality of the natural light that was streaming into the room. These are my favourite kind of shots really, not posed, not planned; just capturing the moment.

Life’s busy and the wedding photography is starting to gather pace. I’m really looking forward to this year’s weddings, meeting new couples and photographing new venues. Haven’t had a Castle Howard wedding yet (get the hint people!) but I love it there and last weekend’s early spring sunshine provided the perfect opportunity for me, Sophie and the girls to head out and enjoy a glorious Yorkshire afternoon.

I shoot digital at all of the weddings that I photograph. I prefer digital over film for weddings because of the freedom that it gives me to experiment with shots and instantly judge is something is working out or not. However, my love is for film and all things film related and so whilst I try to do as little post processing as possible, I aim to capture some of the ‘feel’ that film has in the final images that I deliver to my couples. Sometimes however, I bring along one of my old film cameras along to a wedding and fire off a roll or two. Sometimes, no matter how much you can fake that ‘film’ effect, there’s nothing like the real thing…..

Image of the week | The Best Man’s speech

So it’s time for another image of the week and this time round I thought that I’d pick a ‘best man’ shot. I really enjoy photographing the speeches. It’s probably one of the most enjoyable parts of the day for me. Everyone’s relaxed and I know that I’m going to be gifted some lovely shots. I tend to like to work close up during the speeches, not too close but close enough to capture individual reactions and laughter.

This shot was taken during the best man’s speech. I deliberately selected a large aperture (f1.8 I think) to separate the foreground from the background and focus the viewer’s attention on the groom. The best man is there is the shot (he need’s to be otherwise the picture wouldn’t really work) but he’s in the background. This shot is all about the groom.

I met Steph and Richard a while ago through a mutual friend. They’d seen some of my wedding photography and we got to discussing the type of pictures that they wanted of themselves and their daughters. Steph and Richard explained they they were put off by the idea of having stuffy, studio based images that they didn’t feel that they could ‘connect’ with. I agreed, I hate those images, you know the ones I mean, where everybody’s children end up looking the same. Same props, same ridiculously photoshopped eyes (as if their own eyes are not beautiful and perfect as they are already). It rapidly became clear to me that Steph and Richard were my kind of people.

My approach to photographing families is pretty much the same as the approach that I take to photographing weddings – let’s connect, you do what you do, I’ll do what I do and we’ll get some great pictures in the process. No cheesy poses, no fake props and no studio. Let’s go somewhere that means something to you, where you can relax and where we can interact without you feeling inhibited by me snapping away with my camera. I want the record of your day to be authentic and importantly I want you to be able to look back and treasure the memories that were created on that day forever.

This week’s image of the week is one of my favourite shots from 2011. This shot was taken at Paul & Anna’s very rock ‘n’ roll Yorkshire wedding.

Paul and Anna were married in a lovely little venue called Bedern Hall. Paul plays drums for the York based band known as By Default (ace band by the way – go check them out) and the wedding was attended by the great and the good from York’s thriving underground music scene.

After the service, we decamped to York’s Post Office Social Club for the evening’s entertainment which was provided by the wonderful Blackbeard’s Tea Party (another truly great band – especially for couples wanting a more alternative vibe for their wedding).

This shot was taken as Paul and Anna’s first dance ended and their friends rushed onto the dance floor for a group hug. It was a wonderful, unplanned and completely spontaneous moment – a wedding photojournalist’s dream.
